I have just ben clearing a whole lot of "stuff" from my mother's and discovered a folder of letters (and some music) from Freda to my father.
I am about to deposit lots of items from my father's collection to the National Library of Wales Including the Freda Swain file. I thought I would get in touch with you first to see if you were interested!
Thanks for writing such a wonderful article. Freda was one of my great aunts but I never got to meet her (I was just too young but my older sister did). My dad (Christopher Swain, one of her nephews) would love to find out more about her music and get a copy of any manuscripts Timon has, if possible. Piano playing and music in general was very popular on his side of the family and it will mean a lot to him to (and to me) to find out more about her music. Any help would be really appreciated. Best wishes and keep up the great investigative work. :-) Steve Swain
Oh how wonderful - thank you so much for getting in touch! Of course I'll happily put you in contact with Timon. If you send details to leahbroad[at]hotmail.co.uk, I'll introduce you both :)
This is incredible stuff - and so beautifully described - I can see clearly all that music laid out like a vast jigsaw puzzle and hope one day to hear some of it. This is a completely unknown name to me but clearly one that everyone should really come to know.
I loved your book, and I'm also fascinated by Freda Swain. I came across her after hearing recordings of a couple of her short viola and piano works.
I wanted to let you know that I was recently given a copy of Freda Swain's piano sonata by Ruth Gerald, who studied piano at the RCM with Freda's husband. My son has been learning it and will be performing it at the RCM keyboard Festival on Sunday 24 March. The festival is live- streamed, so I hope that more people will get to know his wonderful music.
I've also been to the British Library, where there are quite a few old radio recordings of performances by or with Freda Swain. My dream would be to do a PhD about her one day! Maybe when my kids have grown up.... 😊

Oh gosh how fascinating - yes I certainly am interested! Would love to know what's in the file for sure.

Brilliant work as ever Leah
Fascinating. I am a fan of Bartók so wonder about ‘Sorry, Mr Bartók!’!

It was published by 'Nemo concerts', which I'm guessing was Freda's own publishing company.
